Food allergies are on the rise

One of every 2 will have an allery in future!

According to the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI ) it is estimated that by 2025, one in every two Europeans will suffer from some form of allergy.

Some 1.3 million Spanish are affected by allergies, with nuts and seafood the most common in the adult population. This year Pollen allergy has affected many residents in Spain due to the wind from inland bringing the olive pollen to the coastal areas.

Pollen allergy according to the EAACI is an allergic condition affecting the mucous membranes of the nose and the eyes. It is usually characterised by a runny nose, nasal congestion, and itchy, watery eyes, itchy nose, inner ears and roof of the mouth. These symptoms are caused by a hypersensitivity to airborne pollen such as the pollen of trees, grasses and weeds. When the allergen comes in contact with cell tissues of the body, the tissues release mediators such as histamine  induce allergic symptoms.

Do allergies cause Asthma?

A common question is do allergies cause Asthma. The simple answer is yes, more often than not asthma is caused by an allergy. According to the EAACI the most common type of asthma symptoms are triggered by exposure to “allergens”, such as pollen, housedust mite, pets and moulds. Other asthma triggers include viral infections, exercise, gastrooesophageal reflux, some medications (in particular aspirin) and psychological factors.
